Guinea Pig Keeps Biting The Cage

Hi, Humans, Lola here. Listen. My cage mate Buffy has developed a bad habit. As you know, we live in a big wired cage. Buffy has recently taken to biting and rattling the cage non-stop! I don't understand her. She's upsetting the humans, but she's also bugging me! When I'm trying to sleep in my pigloo, there she goes with the rattling. When I'm munching on hay, she starts up the biting and rattling. Why does she keep biting the cage?

I tried biting the cage myself just to see what the appeal was. As far as I could tell, there is none. It hurts my teeth to bite on metal. Here, check out a video of her doing it:

Anyway, I'm starting to worry about her. Do any of you humans out there have any advice or experiences with your piggies biting the cage? What's the deal?

  1. My guinea pig bits on our cage but doesn't rattle it! Most of the time it is if he is trying to get to something aka: Mika (they love each other and will not stand being seperated!)

  3. Ours still nibble on the bars. Usually it's for attention. Try distracting them with a treat or letting them out for floor time- that usually helps us.

  5. Try putting something in front of the part of the cage that she likes to bite. That usually works for Lola since it gives her something to chew on in place of the bars.

  8. It's just a thing they do. I've had guineapigs since 2004 and most of them have done it. Just try giving some toys and interesting things I chew instead of the bars

  9. Hi guys! My guinea pig just refuses to bite me and the cage bars. I have tried gloves and bitter apple spray and vinegar but she keeps nipping and chewing. How can I stop her destructive and painful rampage?

    1. They are probably scared of you, meaning you need to bond with him/her more... It could also be
      * Needs hay
      * Needs pellets
      * Needs water
      * Wants veggies
      * Wants attention
      * In too small a cage
      * Is bored
      * Or there is nothing else to chew on
      Make sure you have a large cage with plenty of non treated wooden toys and hay to grind down their teeth :)
