Can Guinea Pigs Eat Sweet Potatoes?

We're going to have to start this review by emphasizing the difference between regular potatoes, sweet potatoes, and yams. Regular potatoes should not be fed to guinea pigs at all because they are toxic. Sweet potatoes, on the other hand, can be fed 1-2 times per month. (Yams, by the way, can be fed about twice per week.) Sweet potatoes leaves can be fed almost daily. You can feed us (uncooked) sweet potatoes by rinsing them off and slicing off small portions.

This is pretty good! I'm declaring the rest of it to be mine!
What's going on with you two? I'm supposed to be the dominant pig!

Did you see how Buffy tried to steal the sweet potato right out of my mouth? I was so shocked by this challenge to my dominance that I ran back to my pigloo. Not my proudest moment.

Anyway, sweet potato was really good at first, though we did get a little bored at the end and left some chunks around the food bowl. We'll give it 4/5 stars.

  1. My piggies love sweet potatoes! It's handy because if I buy them for myself and don't get to use them, I can't give them to the pigs before they go off :)

    2. Every website I read said not to put vit c drops in their water. Because they may not drink the water, and just waste the drops.

    1. Hi Heather. You shouldn't just let your guinea pig munch on your neighbor's lawn, or eat any other grass you're unsure of because it may have been treated with chemicals that aren't good for us. You should check out our post on wheat grass for a type of grass your guinea pig can safely eat. Also, you might want to consider taking your guinea pig to a pignic since they always host them in locations where the grass is untreated.

  5. I know guinea pigs love sweet potatoes, i rescued my piggy Jesse a few weeks ago from my school, they were going to dissect him! Anyway, can I cook the sweet potatoes too? Also what about tinned sweetcorn, I'm just feeding him it on the cob atm but it would be easier just to give him it from a can? One more question, I feed him fine sugarsnap peas atm and he loves them, but can he eat plain garden peas? I've always kept hamsters so I'm kinda learning on the job!!

  7. Can I give my guinea pig sweet potato peelings from when I peel my sweet potatoes? He loves carrot shavings - they are almost like fettuccine for him! I'd like to be able to do the same with sweet potatoes and/or yams. Thanks

  8. Thanks, we just gave Buddy some sliced sweet potatoes just now. He couldn't be happier! It's a treat for him as the starch is something he is definitely not used to.
