We have to be careful with new foods, since we can't eat just anything. Once our owners put chives in our food bowl. Chives! Yuck. We screamed and screamed to let them know that chives were most definitely not okay for guinea pigs to eat. FYI, we can't eat onions or potatoes either. They not only taste terrible to us, but they can cause serious harm to our digestive tract. Just because chives are green does not mean we like them!
Anyway, back to the story of the delicious melon we tried today. Our owner held out a slice for us to sniff. At first we were nervous, but then we sniffed it and it seemed tasty:
What's this? Can we eat it?
Lola steals the melon.
But then Lola got greedy and tried to run off with the slice of melon for herself! I, Buffy, am usually so passive, but I was not about to let Lola steal it from me so I snatched it back:Note the angry look in my eye. My melon.
Within minutes the melon was gone. Afterwards, we ran around the room and wheeked happily. We hope the humans will give us more soon!
We had two cats that LOVED cantaloupe, but the piggies... not so much!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the comment! It's helpful for readers to see whether other piggies agree or disagree with our food reviews when deciding what to feed their piggies.
ReplyDeleteMy guinea piggies LOVED it!! First time trying it and they just ate it rigt up! :)
ReplyDeleteWhich piggy ate more? Astro is the dominant one (I think) so he usually eat ALL the food (He doesn't like peas though...) Astro and Mika usually have little competitions on who can eat more grass, lettuce, carrots or parsley! (lol - and cerlary) They just GOBBLE IT UP!!!
ReplyDeleteOne of my piggies liked it but the other one didn't........
ReplyDeletebuddy and cookie fight over it they love it so much
ReplyDeleteMy pigs love chives and head straight for them when out in the garden ,are they very bad for them ? If so I should cover the chives up, I have not noticed and side effects of them eating chives.

ReplyDeleteAt first, we thought that chives were just bad to feed to guinea pigs all around. However, since we wrote this post, we've learned that you can feed us the green top portion of chives once or twice a week.
ReplyDeletemy guinea pigs turbo and toster, well at least turbo likes it,toster not so much
ReplyDeletecan guinea pigs eat tangerines?
ReplyDeleteCan they eat the brine of the melon
ReplyDeleteI would avoid it, since even if they can eat it, it likely contains pesticides.
ReplyDeleteMy Piggies LOVED it. My less active one was not eating it. I held her for a minute and she attacked it. Then my dog got to close. I had to yell at him. She got scared and stopped eating. I picked her up again and when I put her down she loved it again.
ReplyDeleteWe just tried some out on Toby. She took a few nibbles but then left it. Hmmmm. I think she was hoping for her morning romaine. Will try again for a snack:) Adorable blog! My 10 yr. old daughter loves it:)
