Can Guinea Pigs Eat Oranges?

We've reviewed a lot of foods since we started this blog back in March, yet there are still some basic fruits that have fallen through the cracks. Can you believe we've reviewed kumquats, but missed oranges up until now? Oranges can be fed to us only 1-2 times per week due to high sugar content. We can also eat the peels, which we can have 2-4 times per week.

Oranges are sweet, juicy and delicious. We give them 5 out 5 stars. (The peels aren't nearly as good as the flesh, and only get 2.5/5 stars.)
I approve!

  1. I hope I am on the right site, but I don't know where to go. I was Ill and in the hospital, I had a friend "care" for my guinea pig, My poor baby was negelected, I got her back after two months her cage was filthy and she is not making noise, she was well fed but that's it. Can I nurse her back to being happy and how?

    1. It is possible. I had a simular expereince. The best way to begin is change the environment completely that way she no longer has a negative association with that cage. She always will. Get a new cage. Give her a bath *google how to do it, it is simple you literally put them in a tub with an inch of water, mine love it* make sure you can re-socialize her. It might take some time. Just be gentle. Let her feel comfortable again at her own pace. She will get there.

  2. Hi Anonymous-

Sorry to hear that your poor piggie was so neglected! Be sure she has a clean cage, fresh vitamin C rich fruits and veggies (1/4 cup to 1/2 cup daily) and unlimited timothy hay.

You may find that she is not as friendly, but if you treat her well and nurse her back to health, you can get her to trust you again.

I would recommend taking her to a vet for guinea pigs. Just Google "guinea pig vet" and your city and you should be able to find a vet that specializes in exotic pets. The fee for a normal check up is $40-80, depending on where you go. They should be able to tell you specifically what she might need.

Good luck! Let us know how she recovers.

    1. A full orange would be way too much to feed your piggy. See our post on portion sizes for details on how much to feed.
