Can Guinea Pigs Eat Cherries?

Today, the humans fed us cherries. We think they're still trying to make up for forgetting to order the Hayloft hay. Cherries can be fed to us in small portions (about 25 grams) 2-4 times per week. Make sure you remove the pits and stems first!
I discovered the cherries first. Pretty good...
Since Broccoli and Lola couldn't seem to find the plate, the humans moved it closer to them. I had enough cherries at that point, though. They munched on them enthusiastically at first.
Then they got bored, too.
We honestly thought we'd like cherries more than we do since they're sweet and red. They were great at first, but we all got bored of them and wandered off. I'd say 3/5 stars seems like a fair score for cherries.

  1. One of our old GPs loved cherries (fruit & stalk), however the juice would get all over his chin & he looked a little like a vampire guinea pig!

Our current two are however too scared to try them.

  5. Hi Astro. Thanks for the kind words. We have reviewed carrots already, but I don't think we've ever reviewed spinach. We'll tell the humans to pick some up next time they go shopping.

  10. Buffy is the only piggie who jumps on top of the pigloo. We do not live in Herndon, but if you do, we recommend checking out the Metropolitan Guinea Pig Rescue's Fall Pignic. It's on Sunday, September 23rd! http://www.mgpr.org/newsite/News_Events/mgpr_news.htm#pignic

  13. Hi Buffy, Lola, and Broccoli! This is Blanca Nieva along with Alastair Frederick here. Our human mother gave us fresh blueberries recently and we LOVE them! We were wondering how many times a week is it okay for our human mother to give these to us? Also, we saw you guys have reviewed cherries. Can our human mother give us dried cherries? The bag of dried cherries has in it tart cherries, sugar, and sunflower oil. Even though our human mother says Blanca will eat anything and Alastair is way too picky. We're just curious as we usually get bell pepper, we'd like to mix it up a bit.

  14. Hi Theresa! To answer your questions:
    1. We can have 25 gram portions of blueberries 2-4 times per week (see our blueberries post).
    2. In general, it's better to give us fresh fruit rather than dried fruit due to the high sugar content. You can give a couple raisins or dried figs once in a great while, but they should otherwise be avoided. This is especially true if there's added sugar. Keep reading our blog, and we're sure you'll find plenty of fresh fruit and veggie options that will give you other ways to "mix it up a bit"! :-)

  15. I have 6 guinepigs, and whenever I feed them cherries, they look like satan.

I think that they are, also our only boy guinepig is now scared of the girls.

  16. I just gave Squeaks a half of a cherry and dropped the stem in by accident he ate the stem and left the half of cherry. Haha, so cute. At the moment fresh mint sprigs are his favorite. I give him one daily. I grow it myself. Have you tried any herbs?
